Club News:
Hope your summer finds you well and dry. July was a productive month for King Lion, the Officers, and Board, as our vision for the upcoming year has been largely hammered out. We hope to emphasize Community Service on a personal level, through many smaller projects in which more of our members can be involved. This type of interaction should help get the word out on what Lionism is all about, even as it fosters a greater sense of fulfillment for our members. Lion Al Redner has stepped up to the plate to chair our new Community Service Committee, and we're all encouraged to forward our community service ideas to him along with any thoughts on how we could help individuals in need.
We'd also like to get the word out by conducting a "Show off the Club Night" for new and prospective members at the October 11th meeting. This event should help us to focus our recruiting efforts. In other words, if there's somebody you're thinking of asking, we've got the perfect date for it!
Do you remember PDG Fred Daniels' visit in January where he spoke to us about Diabetes awareness? He also mentioned the 225th Anniversary of The Battle of Newtown, to be hosted on his farm this summer. It's coming up on August 27th through the 29th and according to their website the Chemung Valley Living History Center is still looking for volunteers. If you've ever been to one of their annual events you'll know that the re-enactors are highly dedicated and rather convincing! You can check it out at

Message from King Lion (8/2/04):
Our thoughts & prayers should be with Lion Bryan Foster & family this week especially. As many of you know their son (2 yr old) is on a wait list for a liver transplant. I talked with Bryan tonight and they will receive results of further testing this Wed. and hopefully will find out that the transplant will be unnecessary. Also, mother-in-law is still fighting cancer.
Picnic:
Our annual Picnic will be at the Cooper pavilion on August 16th at 6PM. Hamburgers & hot dogs will be provided and there will be a $2/person donation to defray expenses. Lion Al Redner is organizing the 'dishes to pass' portion of the picnic, and the original signup sheet is listed below. Bring a friend!

Board Action:
Our Club received a nice thank you note from Gary Nelson, our most recent Citizen of the Year. The 2004-2005 budget will be ready for discussion at the 8/23 Board meeting and will be submitted for approval by the general membership at the first meeting in September. The possibility of donating a piano for the Big Flats Community Center was discussed and Lion Gary Bernhardt estimated the cost at $3,000 - $4,000. King Lion Marshall asked for a definite cost proposal before a vote could be taken, and Lion Gary will also look into a leasing option. Lion Steve Connors proposed we sponsor a grant for NYS Bermuda Project for opening a Low Vision Center in Chemung County. This is of no cost to the Club, and merely shows our local support of the project. A motion was made by Lion Merrill Lynn to sponsor this grant. It was seconded by Lion Mary Ann Balland and passed unanimously.
Crystal House:
Please note that we are planning to continue our meetings at the Crystal House though 12/13 at least.
