Club News:
We stayed busy in May with three consecutive weekends of Adopt-A-Highway, followed by coffee service over the Memorial Day weekend at the Campbell rest stop. We were also fortunate to have Lion Art Elliot as a speaker at our May meeting. Lion Art gave a heartfelt account of the services offered by the Finger Lakes Region Lions Hearing Foundation, and sprinkled it with good humor.
Without a doubt, June is the busiest month of the year for our Club. Work begins on June 8th with the Vintage Car Show Chicken BBQ, followed by the Community Days BBQ on the 14th and the Historical Society Open House BBQ on the 22nd. We'll round out the month with the Awards Dinner and Installation of Officers on June 23rd.
Menu for Awards & Installation of Officers Meeting on the
23rd:
* Cucumber and Dill Bisque
* Tossed Caesar Salad with Croutons
* Grilled Chicken with Tropical Fruit Salsa
* Rice Pilaf
* Fresh Summer Medley of Vegetables
* Chocolate Raspberry Mousse
Board Action:
We received a note from Art Elliott, speaker at the last dinner meeting, thanking the Club for inviting him and sharing how much he enjoyed his visit. We also received thank you notes from LCIF and Boy Scout Troops 3097 and 87 for recent donations, and Empire State Speech and Hearing Clinic for participating in their raffle. Lion Donna Barto attended the Testimonial Dinner for DG Rich Shaff. She reports that our Club received a first place award for Lions participation and that Lion John Farr received the Chuck Koman Award. Lions Mike and Grace Yanak hosted Cancer Trekker Polly Letofsky for a Saturday night, and Lion Donna Barto took her to Elmira. Lion Donna also joined her for the 5K walk and then took her back to Ithaca. Installation Dinner - It was suggested last fall that widows be invited as our guests to this function. Lion Sue will peruse the membership records and provide Lion Rita with a list. Finally, the menu for the School Reunion Dinner has been changed to chicken!
Farewell to the Johnstons:
In May we bid farewell to two faithful and long-time members, Lions Pat and Norval Johnston, who are moving to West Virginia. Lion Pat joined our Club in 1995 and had perfect attendance ever since.
She chaired or served on a number of directorships and committees, but she's probably best known as Lion Tamer, and for her six years leadership of the Big Flats Food Pantry. Whether it was a picnic, BBQ, or the Pantry, if it had to do with food, Pat was your Lion. Lion Norval served in all capacities of Vice President and President, as well as a variety of leadership roles in committees and directorships. With 15 consecutive years of perfect attendance, Lion Norval is a double recipient of the Lion Of The Year award. Notably, Lion Norval served as Secretary/Treasurer for five years and is a three time recipient of the 100% Secretary Award. Together they sponsored ten new Lions, and this is perhaps their greatest contribution to our Club, our District, and Lionism in general.
King Lion Rita adds the following: "Others in Big Flats have known Norval and Pat much longer than I but their friendship and example have taught me what Lionism truly is. As a fairly recent membaer, I knew that they would willingly help. All throughout this past year as President I have depended on Norval to keep me organized and on track and making my job easier. With the Johnstons on my speed dial help was only a phone call away. Others in the Club can give you all the statistics on their impact on the Big Flats Lions Club but for me they are shining examples of what "We Serve" means both to the community, the Club and its members. They will be missed! Rita
Dery"
We'll miss their friendship and service, and we wish them all the best.
Hilton Garden Inn Agreement:
As was reported in the May Bulletin, the Board approved the proposal from Hilton Garden Inn for the upcoming year, and this includes an increase in dinner price to $12. Members present at the April Board meeting filled out an evaluation form on the services provided by the Hilton and requested that the menu be known prior to the meetings.
Birthdays in
June:
Happy birthday wishes go out to Lions Rita Dery, June 11th, Gene
Herber, June 17th,
and Bryan Foster, June 22nd.
