Club News:
At our first meeting in January, Mary Lee Fairbrother from the Steuben Chapter of the American Red Cross gave a wonderful presentation on the topic, "'Til Help Arrives". PDG Art Peck and Lion Donna Peck were welcomed as guests at our second meeting, and Gary Emerson gave us all some background on Queen Catherine of Montour Falls with a great slide presentation.
As reported earlier, our Club is looking at various options for a Community Service Signature Project. One idea is to build a gazebo for the Big Flats Town Park, and Lion Marshal Updike is heading a committee to evaluate the feasibility for this. We've received some good information from the Painted Post Lions, and our doors are open for suggestions regarding this or other projects that would capture the spirit of a signature project.
New Member - Tom Rhodes:
Our Club extends a warm welcome to Lion Tom Rhodes, who joined our ranks in January. Lion Tom is a life-long Dairy Farmer and Big Flats resident, a member of the Big Flats Zoning Board of Appeals, and his wife's name is Barbara. Lion Norval Johnston was sponsor, and Membership Chair Lion Steve Connors conducted the induction ceremony. Lion Tom's address is 194 Hibbard Road, Horseheads. His phone is 562-3146, and email trhodes@stny.rr.com. On behalf of all of us, welcome to Lionism!
Board Action:
Lion Stephan Connors reported that two large rooms needed painting at the offices for Southern Tier Association for the Visually Impaired. Our Club has agreed to furnish the labor, and details will follow at the next meeting. Lions Telephone Listing - Lion Al Draht reported that he had met with Lion Donna Peck and the listing was going to be placed in the phone directory for "Lions Clubs of the Southern Tier" utililizing the same number as Empire State Speech & Hearing Clinic, 607-732-7069. Listing will appear when directories are printed in the Fall of 2003. King Lion Rita announced that she had appointed Lions Ed Fairbrother (Chair), Don Roe, Patricia Johnston and Mike Yanak to Citizen of the Year and Lion of the Year Committee. President Dery also reminded Lions that the former venue for Journey for Sight was no longer valid due to the change in meeting location. She suggested moving the event to a Saturday morning at the walking trail in Community Park followed with breakfast for the participants. This idea will be presented to Lion Mary Ann Balland, Chairperson for the event.
Valentine's Day 5K Race to benefit the Big Flats Food Pantry:
Lion Gene Herber circulated a sign-up sheet at the last meeting, and there's one spot left for anybody wishing to participate. The race begins at noon, and here's the latest list of Course Marshals:
