Club News:
The main attraction at our first meeting in April was an extremely well-behaved guide dog in training, presented by Allen and Patricia Caldwell from Guiding Eyes for the Blind. It costs $25,000 to breed,
raise and train each dog, yet there is no charge to the blind partner for the dog, the training, or the follow-up support. Lions Marshall Updike and Jim Adamy were also presented their 15-year pins at this meeting. Congratulations Lions! PID Ed Cordes and Lion Gail Cordes were present at our second meeting, and they showed slides and described their recent trip to Nicaragua to dispense eyeglasses. Lions Don Williams, Merrill Lynn, Bill Powell, and Al Draht painted the west side roof on the Cooper Pavilion in Big Flats Community Park on April 16th. Eighteen hours of labor and $70 of material were donated to this cause. Lion Don's goal is to get the east side painted in the next several weeks.
Membership Chair Lion Rita Dery had a creative exercise for us at the first meeting in April: Suggested member applications were distributed after the regular meeting, and members were given 10 or 15 minutes to write as many names as they could think of. There was an element of competition to it, and the effort yeilded 40 to 45 prospects! Individuals and spouses will receive invitaions for our Summer Picnic as guests of the Club. These invitations will by signed by the referring Lion.
Members are reminded of the Mint Sale at Sam's Club on June 1st, and the Memorial Weekend Coffee Reststops at Cambell on May 25, 26, and 28. King Lion Gary Bernhardt would also like to remind members of the MD-20 Convention in Binghamton on May 3 - 5. Lions Rita Dery and Donna Barto are delegates to the Convention. Please note that the May 13th meeting will begin at 7PM instead of 6:30 due to Journey for Sight. We have some busy months ahead!
Board Action:
Our Club received several Thank You notes in April for various donations. These included the Big Flats Branch Library, Boy Scout Troop 3097, Big Flats Little League, Finger Lakes Region Lions Hearing Foundation, Leader Dogs Foundation, and LCIF, Dr. Jean Behar, for $800 donation for September 11 Disaster Relief. Lion Gene Herber reported that Adopt-A-Highway turnout was poor on March 30th due to Easter Holiday Weekend. Three members donated 14 hours. Lion Merrill Lynn suggested that future pick-ups be scheduled on weekdays and possibly in the evenings to get better participation. Sales Tax Update - Lion Gary reported that he had spoken with Attorney Charles Becraft's office and had been referred to the Dobromil Accounting firm for input. The secretary has not applied for a vendor tax number at this time.

Baked goods individually wrapped should be given to a Lion going up to Campbell to serve if you are not serving yourself. Only 3 Lion's have signed up to donate food so I expect others will give so we can have snacks for visitors. This is a major money maker so we need to make it as welcoming as possible. Have Fun!!
